Sun 6th Jun A House Meeting on repertoire

Cathy Elliott led the session at our house. The first of a series in which she is meeting membes locally to look at what pieces they like to use for teaching.

We passed round the fiddle, trying out pieces from the TG Grades 2 and 4 violin exams. Here it's Sue's turn.

ESTAWM 2010 AGM

at the Elgar Birthplace Centre, with a Presentation on Trinity Guildhall Examinations given by Marianne Olyver and Robert Schuck.

Marianne & Robert

Photo censored. The artistes said it wasn't professional enough! Yes, I'm being childish about it.

Both instructive and very enjoyable. After demonstrating exam pieces from a range of grades, the two Trinity Guildhall examiners moved on to the technical exam work. To illustrate some of the supporting tests, pianist/clarinettist Robert (having had just one short violin lesson) was made to play some tests from the Initial syllabus, and we all had to try marking one piece using the examiners' guidelines.

After our brief AGM they played (very nicely) a few light pieces, including a little known Serenade in G for violin and piano by Elgar which attracted much interest, but which appears to be out of print.

Sun 14th November National Forum Day, Clarendon Muse, Watford Steven Doane masterclasses (right) - good value as ever - coping with stage fright - also pretty engaging when it got going - and AB aural tests - a dull subject clunkily presented if you ask me. Photo of Steve

Sun 10th April National Forum Day in Cardiff Apart from the masterclasses, with mostly local candidates, the rest of the programme was called off because hardly anybody applied. I wasn't all that surprised. But to think, I'd moved my birthday party specially for it. It was still a great party though.
